FRANK WATSON MEMORIAL U15 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

– Tournament Heats Up As Several RMAs Commence Activities

22nd February, 2018, Georgetown: Persistent rains right across the ten regions have been responsible for the late start of the GFF-Pele Alumni Frank Watson Memorial U15 football tournament. The rains have abated somewhat and the organizers are preparing to commence, in some cases, while resuming activities in others.

Residents in villages along the East Coast corridor will be out in their numbers to witness the grand launch of activities under the aegis of the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) at the Golden Grove Ground starting at 13:00hrs tomorrow afternoon.

Clubs are advised to assemble at the venue by 12:00hrs to conform to the ceremonial march pass of teams whereupon the match between Golden Stars FC and BV/Triumph FC gets underway at 15:00hrs.

Meanwhile, activities in Region One has commenced with their launch over the past weekend. However, organizers are still putting the modalities in place and matches will subsequently get underway within few weeks.

The tournament is well underway in the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) with matches being played late last year. However, there has been a lull in activities and according to President of the UDFA, Terrence Mitchell, the tournament will resume sometime next week. Mitchell further disclosed that his administrators will wrap up activities within the next three weeks.

The inclement weather has also affected play on the West Bank for two successive weeks following its launch on February 3. In those matches Wales United had defeated a Combined Team 7-1 while Den Amstel had triumphed over Eagles FC 2-1. Activities will resume tomorrow afternoon when Pouderoyen tackles a Combined team at 14:00hrs in the supporting match to the Wales/Eagles encounter at 16:00hrs. Visiting FIFA Regional Director, Marlon Glean, is scheduled to be on hand to witness the matches.

Meanwhile, the Essequibo Coast / Pomeroon Football Association will commence activities tomorrow afternoon at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground from 13:00hrs while the Berbice Football Association’s tournament gets underway on Sunday, Feb 25 with a double header at the Esplanade Ground from 09:00 hours.

President of the GFF, Wayne Forde revealed that the GFF-Pele Alumni Frank Watson National U15 Intra-Association tournament is the second Intra Association development league introduced by his administration. He contends that it is a critical pillar in the GFF youth development structure and that all strategies implemented are aimed towards the advancement of local ball weavers in the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
