NATIONAL UNDER-17 SQUAD SHORTLISTED

– To face-off Jamaica in opener

12th July, 2016; Georgetown: Head Coach of the National Under-17 squad, Anthony Stephens, has named a 19-man  squad to participate in the Caribbean Football Union’s Men’s Under-17 Tournament scheduled for the United States Virgin Islands beginning on the 15th July, 2016.

These include two goalkeepers, five forwards, five mid-fields and seven defense players; two overseas-based players – Joshua Ferreira and Roberto Case – are also included in the team. Additionally, there are seven members of the technical team. (pls see complete squad below)

The squad has been finalized following an initial shortlisted 26 players selected from the trials held on 25th June and 2nd July, 2016 respectively.

According to Head Coach, Anthony Stephens, the team has been engaged in daily training and he is pleased with the preparation. “The team has seen a rise in the fitness of the players as well as their technical and tactical ability. In addition, the team spirit has been good and he feels that they should be ready for their first game. He made a call for continued fan support, “They (the fans) should go 100% behind Guyana’s Under-17 because we are pushing hard, we are pressing hard and we are trying hard so they can come out victorious in this group, qualify for the next round and make Guyana proud.”

The team is scheduled to depart Guyana for USVI on the 13th July, 2016. Guyana has been placed in Group Four with USVI, Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda and will play their first game against Jamaica on 15th July, 2016 at the Lionel Roberts Stadium, USVI at 14:30hrs. The second and third matches in the Round will be played on July 17 against USVI commencing at 17:00hrs and the 19th July against Antigua and Barbuda commencing at 14:30hrs. The tournament is scheduled to conclude on 25th September, 2016 in Trinidad and Tobago.

The complete technical squad includes Carlos Bernard (Manager); Anthony Stephens (Head Coach); Linsworth Gilbert (Youth Development Officer); Gavin Browne (Goal Keeper Coach); Eon De Viera (Assistant Goal Keeper Coach); Devnon Winter (Equipment Manager) and Lindley Langhorne (Physiotherapist).

Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Wayne Forde, visited and interacted with the team on the 7th July, 2016. In brief remarks he reminded them of the important role they perform as national ambassadors and the general behavioral expectation of the team by the Council.

In addition, Forde offered words of encouragement to the team; “I have all confidence that you will do exceptionally well but you need to remain focused… So focus, pay attention, work hard and make yourself and country proud.”

On Saturday, 9th July, the team played and defeated a combined East Bank Demerara Under-21 team in a practice match held at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora by 3-0; Omar Brewley (2) and Joshua Ferreira (1) were the scorers.
